automatic update causes blue screen

  silliw 20:41 22 Dec 06

My brothers Dell 2400 series pc keeps blue screening. Ran msconfig, turned all the services off and progressively turned each one back on one by one. Finally managed to track it down to the automatic update service which I have turned off. The blue screen stop error is
0x000008E (0xc0000005, 0xXEF8689FE,0xEE437A20,0,00000000)

Any ideas how I can resolve this issue or should I just leave the automatic update service turned off.

Do you mean Microsoft automatic updates or Dell?

Hi Anskyber,

Under services in the system configuration utility it says automatic updates and the manufacturer is Microsoft Corporation so I assume it is the Microsoft automatic updates. The machine blue screens within about 20 seconds of getting to the desktop screen.
