I was looking at buying some Kind of Audio peripheral for my toshiba laptop. I wasn't sure if a speaker system with sub would work ok with a laptop?

I am not sure whether such a setup would work on your laptop, on mine there is only a headphone socket, which I suppose you could use but I don't know at what quality. However, there is an external soundcard called the SoundBlaster Extigy and plugs in via USB. This would provide good quality sound and the necassary sockets to plug in some speakers and sub.

If you have a speaker socket at the back it will work. Speaker's are mostly self powered, you will have to make sure that they are when you buy them. Meaning they will have there own Amp built in

You can buy an external sound "card" for laptops, that interfaces via USB
