Audio Driver won't start

I have a problem with a Mesh machine. After it failed to start it was necessary to install a new hard drive and fresh install of Windows XP. All is well except that the sound doesn't work. Looking in System>Hardware the audio device C-media AC97 is shown with the exclamation mark. I have tried deleting the device, updating the driver etc, and searched the web for the right driver. However - it still won't work, reporting 'Device not started'.
Any ideas on where to go next - it was working perfectly before the hard drive crash.
