Audio Device Error

Hi. I have a friend who runs windows xp home on a fairly modern spec pc (2 gig processor, 256mb ram)

Recently he is finding that when he tries to access speech properties from the control panel he is met with the following error:

"The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and / or different audio device"

Trying to change audio input, he is met with the error:

"An exception occured while trying to run "shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl",Speech"

Any help would be much appreciated.

Not sure did you try Start>run> and type...

sfc /scannow leaving the space between the c and the / ... you will need your install disk handy as the computer will ask for it...

This might help , and your back at the top of the list , sure someone has an idea....!!!!!!
