Audio Device conflict.

I am helping a teacher at my school try and fix her sound problems, with her computer. She has not had sound the entire year, but does not know why. I thought.. I narowed it down, but the solution that I came out with, just reavealed a different issue.

She was missing a audio controller, so I had her reinstall Sound Max, from her XP disk. Once that was installed, and tried to run the program, but an error poped up saying to this degree, "This application cannot run, because another program is in use," or something. Can't think of it at this time. But, she cannot play any songs still, and is acting the exact same as it is. Her computer is hooked into a Smartboard, and running standard WinXPpro. In the device manager, the Smart Technologies, Inc. has an exclamation next to it, but I am not sure where to update the drivers, nor how to fix it.

any suggestions/solutions for this, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
