Audacity and Vista

I am having a problem recording streaming audio with Audacity on my new laptop.

I am running Vista Home premium, the laptop is an HP Pavilion Media Centre HDX9095EA with 3d soundblaster pro compatible sound card.

It records at a very low level even with the input volume selected at maximum. When I turn the laptop volume up, I get a loud "howl" and the volume increases on the audacity graph but it sounds like it is coming througn a tin can.

I have also tried recording sound whilst playing a CD. It plays normally until I press the record button on Audacity and I get the same as above.

Any help gratefully appreciated as I am compiling a charity quiz night and want to record some streaming audio.

Thanks
