Audacity input selector

I am trying to make audio recordings of whatever my sound card is playing. I have been trying to use Audacity but the input selector on the tool bar is greyed out. Going to "Edit","Preferences" and sececting the input source from there makes no difference, the input selector is still greyed out. When sound is coming through the sound card the Audacity output volume slider control works ok but when I try to record it just records silence.

I have posted this problem on the Audacity forum but have not had a satisfactory response. I notice several other people are having the same problem.

You guys at PCA have always solved my problems in the past. Can you help me this time?

I use Jet Audio for recording and Audacity for processing.
