Attributes when Backing up On To CD-R

Being the fine example of perfection that I am - I regularly back up essential stuff by burning it onto CD-R.

Until recently I have never needed to recover stuff from the CD but I have just done a re-format and wanted to restore the data I have on the CD.

To do this I just copied the data from the CD back onto the hard drive.

I was a bit irritated to find that all files copied on to the CD had had their attribute set to "read-only", and this carried over when I copied them back onto my hard drive.
I now have to go to each folder edit > select all >file >properties and re-set the attribute.

For the future - is there any way around this ?
