Attaching an external modem

My Belkin router and Dell desktop are having trouble talking to each other. Until I can do without the internet, I am on a D-Link ADSL Modem to connect to my ISP (Pipex). I have now been 'handed down' my daughter's laptop and am wondering if I can attach the D-Link ADSL Modem to that instead of the desktop, so that my desktop can go in for attention. The D-Link appeared with the desktop when my son swapped computers over - I do not have a disk or any instructions, but it is in a USB port on the desktop, so I thought I could put it into a USB on the laptop instead. I am terrified to begin in case I mess EVERYTHING up. I would welcome any advice. margb
