silly question. my psu has standard 20 pin motherboard connector plus a small square 4 pin connector. will the psu still be ok for a athlon 64 or will i need a new one.

mobo will be asus a8v deluxe, with athlon 64 3000+, 1gb corsair pc3200 mem and psu is made by JSP 550watt.

thanks in advance for your help.

To the best of my knowledge, your existing power supply will be fine.

thanks LastChip. should have done this first before posting, looked at asus website and all should be ok.

The small plug you are talking about connects to the mobo ATX12v newer AMD boards have this now as a power supply for the processor like Intel's have. Page 50 of you manual.

64 bit boards are to a new stanard with separate powering for the CPU.
Therefore existing PSU's unless very recent will not have the suitable cable/connector
I raided this 'Q' last week in the consumer page

see click here

Existing power supplies are fine. The connector you refer to was originally fitted for the Pentium P4 and has been around for two or three years.
