ATA or SATA for external HDD

I would like to know if i should get a ATA or SATA as an 2.5" external HDD for my laptop. what are the advantages and disadvantages of the both? I know that SATA is the newer of the both. which one is more reliable and which one is less likely to overheat? Many Thanks.

It will make little or no difference - they will both be running through USB I presume - so no speed advantages either way.

Get the one that's best value/longest warranty/most facilities/best know make/etc.

Now - many external 2.5 drive caddies have a 2x USB input cable - so that they can draw enough power without a separate power supply. Check that that's what you want/can cope with - or would a device with a PSU suit you better?

PS - metal case ones are preferable for heat dissipation in my view.

yeah, it'll be a usb one, and will get a metal casing too. Thanks.
