Asus P5GD1 Q-Fan settings

Hi there, I'm having overheating problems with my P4 3.4Ghz CPU (775 type). The Asus P5GD1 bios (latest version flashed in) has a feature called Q-fan which is supposed to dynamically adjust the fan speed to keep the temperature steady.

However mine refuses to spin faster than 2500rpm. It does seem to slow to 2000rpm when cpu is idle so I guess the sensing circuit is ok. Idle temp is still to high I think, at 50 degrees. Load peaks at over 60 degrees and eventually cpu shuts down pc when it about 67 degrees (I;ve been doing a lot of alt-tabbing to keep an eye on temperature sensing software!)

Does anyone have any experience with this mobo? After updating to the latest bios version I'm out of ideas. Perhaps the fan isn't designed to spin faster, it's the one supplied by intel with the cpu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
