Assigning / Adding a Drive letter

I'm running windows 2000 professional on a pentium 2 533mhz. I have one single harddrive and a cd rom.
The problem is that drive D for the cd rom is missing in my computer folder. In the device manager it doesn't show cd rom under drives, though it shows secondary IDE to be working properly.
My cd rom is known to be working. It even open/ejects and closes. Can you please tell me how i can assign the letter D for the drive in order to access it.
