with adsl it is a case that the further you are from the exchange the slower your connection will be. Cable being fibre has the potential to run at almost whatever speed they decide to send. All supplies are subject to contention ratio - this being the number of people on line at the same time. The bandwidth is split between everybody the more online the less bandwidth each. I hope this clears it up a bit for you. I am on an up to 8MB adsl but have never got more than 2MB.
