Arranging Desktop Icons by Name?

Win XP.

I keep trying to arrange by name but nothing happens.

The first and second column are alphabetical but when it gets to "Y" it starts again from "A" in the 3rd and 4th columns up to "W" then starts from "A" again.

Could it be that the sort is by folders alphabetically and then starts again with single files.

None of them are folders. They are all shortcuts to the program .exe file.

Worked OK when I was on Win 98SE.

Have you got Auto Arrange checked?

This doesn't help but I've got rid of all the icons on my desktop apart from the recycle bin and Roxio drag to disk. They are unnecessary - everything is accessible from the Start menu.

Thanks, VoG™. Very nearly right. I have 4 Excel spreadsheets which are used daily. They are not accessible from the Start menu, which is why they are Shortcuts on the Desktop. I like my Desktop to show all my regularly used Progams, just a double click and they open.

I have just arranged the Icons by name manually, hopefully they will stay like that.

You can pin files and folders to the Start menu click here
