I have tried every day for the last 4 days to update my AVG anti virus, but all I get is "your database is up to date" Are we beating these virus writing idiots?

The lack of update from AVG worried me too, but not too much, because the notifications from Sophos which I get at work have slowed down dramatically in the last couple of weeks from several to one or two per day.
