Applications Won't Start at Boot-Up

Once XP has booted, I try and run any application and it seems as though it is about to run (i.e. there is HDD activity) however nothing happens. The same goes when I try and run another app.....then another....it isn't until I run an app at after around 5 mins that all the previous apps that I tried running start at once.

There isn't any particular app that invokes all other processes to start, nor is there anything explicitly abnormal happening in terms of processes.

I'm running Windows XP Pro and this has not happened previously, nor have I installed anything new or done anything different.

Any ideas?
