apdproxy takes over PC

I have an intermitant problem that my PC (WinXP SP2) grinds to a halt. When I look at Task Manager I find that apdproxy (part of Photoshop Elements) is using 98/99% of the CPU. I can resolve it by removing apdproxy using "End Process".
I have done a virus scan and run Adaware.
Any suggestions?
