Hi, im trying to update my drivers for a Maxtor external bHard Drive and other drivers that may need updating and iv downloaded something called 'Driver Detective' which tells me that 14 of my drivers are out of date, is this programme reliable? Is there a better one i could use?

I used Driver Detective for many years until it ceased, IIRC, to be a freebie.

There's a similar feature on PCPitStop, which first checks your system out thoroughly. See:

But the best bet is still to visit the manufacturers' websites of any of your system's components, devices, peripherals etc for the latest drivers.

Try Drivermax available here click here
I've found it very good.

Any such program will advise you that there are updated versions available of almost all your drivers, but that is certainly no reason to install them. Generally speaking only update if you have a problem with the existing driver.

Thanks for that sea urchin, im struggling to get my maxtor external hard drive working though..

Yes, so no problem downloading the driver if you think you need it - I was simply saying that Driver Detective will tell you there are many other drivers you could update as well.

I would agree with jja244 - I use DriverMax

By the way, you seem to have two threads running on this subject - it's best to stick to one - less confusing for everybody (including you).

Maybe have a look at the reviews for Driver detective first and then see if you want to try it.
