Any Suggestions for a motherboard?

I'm thinking about a new build and thought a motherboard was the best place to start.

I liked the look of the asus P5B because it supports everything from p4 to quad core and will take DDR2 up to 8GB.

Is this a good place to start or has anyone got a better suggestion in the same price range. Bearing in mind I'm very much an amateur.
