Can anyone explain to me when it is appropriotte to use an index on an Oracle table? Any help would be appreciated.

If you want a real answer to this question you should read some books on database design. Index or keys are not only used to reference records in tables but very importantly to keep referential integrity within the database. It's one thing to learn to program a database with SQL but good database design and structure is another thing in itself. I would say you should have some sort of index in every table you created, if it is a relational database.
