Any experiences of scanner lamps going dim?

Just trying my query at click here again, with a different title.

Basically my scanner, which is 8 or 9 years old, is acting as if its lamp is fading. Do scanner lamps do that, as opposed to failing completely in an instant as light bulbs do? (If they fade, I might as well forget about troubleshooting and get a new one)

It's possible the lamp is going dim because they are discharge lamps like florescent lamps which fade over the passage of time. The modern scanners use cold cathode lamps which do have a longer life than florescent lamps.

Yes, old type scanner lamps do dim as they age.

You may as well say goodbye to the scanner as, if it's as old as you say, it's unlikely you will be able to get a replacement lamp and, even if you could, it would almost certainly cost more than a modern scanner costs new.

Thanks octal and €dstowe. It is shopping time then!

Hmmm...wonder if the case would serve as a seed propagator, or maybe a display case...
