Any chance of USB on this PC?

Old 95, now 98SE, Bios Phoenix Technologies motherboard, 1995.

I've fitted an OPTi 82C861 USB PCI, getting 5v OK, but all devices connected come up as 'unknown', and don't work.

According to click here I'm doomed.

Any glimmer of hope, anyone?

What devices ? Obvious question have you installed the device drivers ?

  alan227 20:13 29 Nov 04

Did you install the drivers for the pci card

  Graham ® 20:18 29 Nov 04

Have a look near the Back of the motherboard for two rows of USB header pins there will be 4 or 5 pins in each row and they will be side by side on the back edge of the Mobo. they may be covered by Com wires so you will need to look

USB drivers are loaded from Mobo CD

PS also look in BIOS to see if USB is enabled

Good tip re bios (got caught out by that on son's PC just yesterday), but it may need a flash update if Mobo was Win95 era.

I'll look for the pins when the sun comes up!

Mobo CD?, Did they have CDs in 1995?

No USB in BIOS (yet).

Jeffers22, not going the flash route again, thanks!

I tried this a little while ago. The answer is not good. I tried to fit USB 1 cards to P2's running Win 95, 98 & ME. It didn't work as the motherboards didn't have USB as standard and Windows didn't support USB unless it is part of the BIOS. I'm told that if I had loaded XP with Service Pack 1 the USB cards would have worked. However I never managed to make it work (no XP) and now I've junked the PC's
