I have an old PC running Win98 SE (yes there are still some out there). I was running Free AVG 7.5 antivirus but this is no longer supported and no virus defition updates are available. Free AVG8 does not instal on Win98 SE.

What free alternatives are available? Google enquiry suggests Avast 4.8 free home edition but I've no knowledge of this package.

Any suggestions on alternatives or comments on Avast 4.8 would be appreciated.

I'm also running Spwareblaster 4.1 and have Spybot 1.5.2 (which is not real-time)

I'd got with Avast too. Spybot is now at v1.60 by the way.

Have downloaded and installed Avast 4.8 OK. Thanks to all for your feed-back. One more question .....

Does Avast provide real-time protection for Internet browsing as well as e-mail scanning (IE6 and Outlook Express).

Do I still need Spywareblaster or SpyBot?

Scroll down to Standard Resident Protection:

NOT AOL e-mail, though, which uses a different system.

Use both SpywareBlaster and Spybot if you wish. Neither conflicts with Avast! 4.8.
