Having got rid of the above virus, I read the bleeping computer info on it more thoroughly; seems it is more likely to attack computers that don't have up to date software patches and recommends using Secunia click here free scanner. I tried it and it's an efficient way of checking and updating things like flash and java. Saved me a lot of time.

Used to use Secuna but dumped it. Not keen on a program uploading info about my PC. Same with FileHippo's update checker. Just my paranoia I think!
Flash and Java now auto update.

Check in control panel, java, java control panel, update tab. Set mine to check daily.
