hi i have been having trouble updating nod32 the last few months and am now going to uninstall it i was thinking of avast free but would like to know if it lets you know at the bottom of the emails that it has checked as nod dose thanks Chippy

Yes it does.
On out going it prints a message to the receiver to the effect that e-mail certified virus free.

On incoming. no message but you will see a small globe spinning in the task bar area as it checks.

If it finds any nasties then a siren goes off you just can't miss.

You can set it to put the message in incoming e-mail.
Right click the avast! taskbar icon and select "On-Access Protection control"
Go to "Internet Mail" and click the Customize button.
In the new window select the POP inbound mail tab and select the "Insert note into clean message" tickbox.
OK everything from that point and Robert's your parents brother.
