AMD 64 - Socket 939 vs Socket 754

I am looking to buy a PC pretty soon and have found that I can get a 3500+ for the same price as the 3400+ (The only other difference is of course the motherboard).

Has anybody heard which is better? The cores both operate at 2200 MHz, FSB is the same but the 3400+ has a 1024KB cache as opposed to the 3500+'s 512KB. However in real terms does anyone know which works better???

The main use of the higher processing power will be for games as office apps are usually a little lighter on the system.

I would suspect the higher cache would lead to improved performance though "in real terms" you probably wouldn't notice any difference.

Skt 939 has support for dual channel DDR400.

You need to remember that with AMD the '3400' and '3500' are performance ratings and not real speeds. The chips are basically the same, both clocked at 2.2Mhz, the 754 - 3400 has 1024kb cache, but the 939 - 3500 uses dual channel ddr. In AMD's eyes this gives the latter chip a performance advantage (especially as AMD CPUs have the memory controller on the chip) and is why it is called the 3500+. It's the reason why i've held off buying a 754 chip and am about to get the 3500+.

As per medicine hat/papa lazarous, in real terms you wouldn't notice a difference between these two cpu's.

The thing to bear in mind, however, is if you would want to upgrade your cpu in the future. If you think your likely to upgrade, then the socket 939 cpu is the one you should go for, as socket 754 is the older platform. From what I've read there wont be any more faster socket 754 cpu's than are currently available(unless AMD move the goal posts again).

Hope this helps, dagwoood.
