Can anyone tell me which is the faster cpu,

Socket A AMD Athlon Barton 3200 400 fsb

or

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester 90nm (Socket 939)

I am about to buy a new mobo and cpu so any advice would be welcome.

I've got the 64 bit 3000+ and it works like a dream. If your buying one go for the 64 bit one. It will mean more compatibility in the future.

If you go for the Athlon XP 3200+ you already have the fastest cpu available for socket A. Go for the Athlon64 and you will be able to upgrade with ease in the future as cpu prices drop.

The AMD Athlon 64 (939 pin) is Winchester whereas the AMD Athlon 3200 is Barton.

I believe that AMD have stopped producing Barton chips because they are now outdated.

The AMD 64 (939 pin) Winchester will be able to run the new Windows 64 bit OPS when it comes out later this year. Whereas the Barton cannot.

the new Windows OS wont be out until at least 2006 so even if you do get an AMD 64 CPU you still have a long way to go when Longhorn is released.

And a old Athlon Barton or XP will still work with the new operating system. It would not be in the interest of Microsoft for it not to.

I don't think you're going to notice much difference at the moment to be honest at least as far as performance is concerned. I've just built a new computer using an Abit board, AMD 64 3200 socket 939 and a Zalman cooler. The difference in noise between this and my old PC which had an Asus board with an AMD XP 2000 is incredible. Socket 939 processors run very cool relative to their power output.
