Am I being stupid?
I got my ntl broadband up and running yesterday and was sure it was way too slow for a 600k connection.
I did several tests today using click here and have got an average of 120kbps.

Now am I being stupid or is that not more like a 128k connection speed??!

If this is a reasonable figure what speed can I expect if I upgrade to a 1Mb connection?

Also, what exactly does a 50:1 contention mean?
If I upgrade to a 1Mb connection, will I still be sharing the connection with the 600k users?

Thanks in advance

if you're still getting results around 120ish then call them and ask them to make sure....

try changing your proxy sever, the addresses can be found from the link.

The link you posted always seems to give low results, mine was only 190 just now.

Try these sites:

Try downloading something if you are on NTL 600k you should get a download speed of approx 70k.

Try ringing 150 first to report a fault.

Have you tried using one of the proxy servers?

ZDNet test gave me 123.8kbps.

Still rubbish.

how do i change the proxy server?

  PSF 15:38 04 Oct 03

To change your settings: In IE click Tools>>>internet options>>>connection tab>>>Lan settings....

The un-check the Auto detect settings.

check use proxy server for your lan settings...

type in the address eg inKtomi..... and select port 8080.

Close IE restart and see if that address is any better. click here for all of the server addresses.

That is low, I tried it and got this result

Your line speed:

670 Kbps

82.1 K bytes/sec

A bit high but it does vary a lot.

Been having browsing probs with NTL too for at least a week!

The download speeds of 570ish kbps are OK but browsing is a nightmare. I contacted NTL and the tech. guy said that contention ratios are not a problem it's just some are on the 'wrong server'??

I had to enter a proxy address, on instruction of NTL, but that doesn't help either.

On opening IE I have to try to get onto about 5 different sites (all blank) and eventually it bursts into life.

Isn't it a case though that we shouldn't have to change our settings costantly just to get it working?
