Alert operating system Mode

I am on a Windows XP home addition. When I switch my computer on, I get a message which reads "alert operating system mode enabed. Amount of memory limited to 256MB Strick F1 key to continue F2 to run the set up utility" what does this mean and how do I get rid the message when I start the computer.

to this thread is that the message you're getting is extremely unusual.

1. Have you done as it suggests, and pressed F2 to run the setup utility?

2. Do you have up to date anti virus software installed?
