I am Thinking of purchasing a radeon 256mb 9600xt for my pc, (spec: amd athlon xp 2000+, 512 DDR 120gig ect but it only has 4x agp on the m'board) i am going to upgrade the m'board and cpu but not quite yet, for the meanwhile will an 8 x agp card work in a 4 x agp slot ( i think ive heard that they do but only at the 4 x standard) is this true??

yes it will work, but as you say only at 4x

will this affect the performance of the card or will it still be fast just not as fast?

4x is still fast

I have a 4x card in my athlon xp2200 and only run it at 2x and it whizzes

Theres not really much of a big noticeable difference between 8x & 4x anyways. And yeah like mentioned before the card can run on your motherboard but only limited at the maximum 4x it can support. Do you know what motherboard model you have cause depending on some circumstances there may be some compatiblity problems.

my motherboard is a Matsonic MS8137C+
Basic Socket A Board

click here+ for the latest BIOS for the board

There is the flash utility there and the BIOS update itself

don't mistake the MS8137C for the MS8137C+
