Could anyone give me an idea what the difference is between the AGP and PCI slot graphics cards? Latter seem more expensive but most of the better spec'd versions are for the former.

AGP is faster because it communicates directly with the processor. Most graphics cards these days are AGP, so PCI will be more expensive simply because not many of them are made.
