AGP Graphics Cards help

i need help finding a decent AGP graphics card. I play a few games, I have 19" videosonic DVI TFT, WinXP Home, AMD 64bit 3400 CPU.

I want to spend around upto £150 mark on the AGP card, Text work is my priority for Spreadsheet account work, but media little DVD's, some flight Sim & MS Golf eventually.

I prefer Nvidia chip so I was looking at 128MB FX5700 cards, I like the sound of them Gigabyte heat pipe (Fan FREE !) cards as I have had a AGP card where the fan was not replacable.

I see there is Sparkle, Winfast, Leadtek, Gigabyte & few others but who does make a good alround AGP card please.

I am not interested in overclocking, any links to reviews of a decent AGP card I would be greatfull.

Cheers all

Don't bother with Geforce FX5xxx cards, look at the 6600GT (£100 or so) , 6800 (starting at about £125 now) - I know the NVidia model numbers but not the equivalent ATI ones, I'm sure someone can make more suggestions on that front.

A specific manufacturer, but a review all the same click here

AGP cards - article & benchmarks click here.

With a budget of £150 you can do a lot better than a FX5700.

List of AGP cards £85-150 (sorted by ascending prices) click here. Use the options/fields on the left column to narrow your search. G

Thanks for your reply. I prefer Nvidia, can you point me towards a uk online source for decent ones. Are they all the same just made by different manufacturers or say Pixelview poor and Ledtek being top ?

Skyver the page to Toms H click here wouldn't load.
So from what you say, I can get more for my money looking at FX6600GT/6800 Does anyone know or one a similar chip on the Gigabyte Silent Heat Pipe range ?

Will the card be a good match for my Videosonic VX924 19" ?

  Skyver 20:13 04 Dec 05

That looks good, I take it you're after a silent card then - good match with a TFT, the 6600GT will handle more games at 1024x768 than any GeforceFX card - what's the native resolution of your monitor?

  Giggle n' Bits 20:26 04 Dec 05

if Yes, then my TFT is 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz with a 3ms repsonse time DVI 550:1

I haven't decided yet on a card but the idea of a Silent heat pipe sounds good.

You say Skyver, the 6600Gt will handle more games at 1024x768 with my screen being a hihger pixel am I right in thinking I need a higer AGP card with a higher pixel rate ?

  Skyver 20:35 04 Dec 05

Yes - to both - everything will look better if you can keep your graphics resolution at the same resolution as the number of pixels the monitor uses; you can always tweak the detail settings in games that your card can't handle at 1280x1024, but you have a pretty powerful PC so it should be able to cope - the next step up is the standard GF6800 but the memory is slower than a 6600GT's so it's not always more capable.
