Advice on processor upgrade please

  learning slowly 13:59 22 Mar 05

I have a very old pc which is running slowly.

I am going to increase the memory from 128mb, but would like to put a faster processor in as well.

I currently have a pentium 3 550mhz and wondered how fast a processor would be compatible. It is a socket 370.

My motherboard is a tmc m17wbm.

I don't have much money as I am retired so I just want to enjoy my pc going a bit faster.

Thank you

Are you sure that is your motherboard because from what I can find out about it click here# it seems to support celeron chips only. Or is this not your board?

Try downloading and running everest click here this will do an audit of your system and tell you what you've got in your case.

It maybe very difficult to find any faster P3 CPU, but you can try Ebay.

I think that the best way is to upgrade motherboard, CPU and memory all together.

cost is not too bad £93.94 click here

maybe get a big harddisk as well when you are at it

just found out your motherboard is micro-atx, so I am going to make another suggestion in case your case is small to fit a atx motherboard

Thanks for the advice folks - I was with learning slowly earlier and we did not anticipate major surgery, just perhaps a bit of a boost for about £30 or £40, probably as you suggest above from ebay, but we could not find the cpu support list for his motherboard.

We already installed everest which told us the original information, and I have some memory with which he is going to perform his first upgrade.

To be honest with you the only upgrades worth doing with a PC this age are a larger hard drive and perhaps more memory depending on the price of the memory, upgrading the CPU presuming it will take a faster one means buying second hand as no one does processors this slow anymore.

This pc is learning slowly's first one and is so old that you are undoubtedly right.

We were just curious as to what it could be upgraded to, as if it was in the region of 800mhz it might be worth £15 on ebay.

Learning slowly only uses the pc for surfing at the moment, although he does have a cd writer to put his photo's on. We are working on a very limited budget, although some of the suggestions above are great value.

His hard drive is not half full yet.

A mobo bundle might be an alternative, you can get the following for around £145 delivered,

Intel Celeron D 2.8GHz
Novatech H/S & Fan
256MB DDR PC3200 400MHz
5.1 channel AC97
Integrated SiS Graphics controller plus AGP 8X slot
Micro ATX Form Factor

all from click here (novatech)

still over budget I'm afraid.

do you know how to get the compatible processor list for the motherboard.

I am giving him 256mb ram
