Advice on new CPU for Asus P5LD2 SE MB

I'm doing a lot of video editing and want to speed things up a bit. At present I have Intel core 2 duo 6300, 2GB RAM and XP Pro. I don't want to go to Vista just yet 'cos I'm happy with XP. How far can I go with a new processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 maybe? Or is that a step or 2 too far? My OS is OEM so would a change of processor also mean a reactivation or new OS?

Check out click here

Select Motherboard, then Socket775 and select your motherboard. It doesn't look as though any revisions of the board allow Quad cores, not even a Q6600.

P.S. You will notice a massive reduction in rendering times with a quad core especially with a relatively mild overclock of around 20-25%.

What a shame - looks like a new MB!! Any suggestions?

The Asus P5K Premium is a bit pricey click here but are great for overclocking. I have 2 of them.

I don't know anything about the Gigabyte GA P35-DS3L from click here other than that Arbico use them in their PC's that score highly in PCA reviews.

The Asus in your link is tempting though, as you say, a bit pricey, and Water cooling is not an option for me. The Gigabyte looks good - all positive reviews though I don't want to go 64 bit. I'll be giving it some thought before making a decision, otherwise I get carried away!!! Thanks again. I'll mark as resolved.

I linked you to the P5K Black Pearl edition. There's a cheaper standard version at click here

Ignore that last suggestion. It's not the Premium version.

Both of mine are Black Pearls but I don't use watercooling. As far as I know most, if not all current CPUs are 64-bit.

I think the Gigabyte GA P35-DS3L is the way I'll go - with a Intel Core2 Quad Q9450 Socket LGA775. While I'm about it I might upgrade my power supply to 700+watts as well (500 at present). Thanks for all you help.

Although only 620W I highly recommend the Corsair HX 620 click here It's virtually silent in the case.

According to the RAMGuy at Corsair it will run 2 ATI HD4870s (I'm only going to run 1) with a Q9450.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that. I don't think I'll change my graphics card though - I have to draw the line somewhere.
