advice on motherboard and chip for good gaming.

  armageddon_outta_here 19:11 19 Apr 03

I'm looking to build a new gaming machine by buying a motherboard, AMD chip, power supply, case and top graphics card And reusing some components from my old Dell p3 (500), such as CD-RW and DVD.

Does anyone have any suggestions for motherboard and amd 2200+ which has lan and onboard sound (5.1)and would be compatible with my existing parts?

Of course, I may chicken out and get the local shop to build the base unit , but I will still need to be able to specify the motherboard/chip.

Any views on choice of components welcomed.

Many Thanks

OK... I am assuming your wanting AMD since your specified and athlon 2200.

The nForce 2 chip set it the bee's knees from all that I have read...(and I hace the nForce 1 which is good!) the onboard sound is good, and does not tax the processor one bit so it can focus on the rest of the game needs.

You will need new DDR ram... if you can afford it get 512... (2 x 256 MB to make use of the duel mem of the nForce chip set).

I dont know how much cash your planning to spend but as for graphics dont accept less than a GF4 Ti4200 with 64MB or Ati 9000 if you planning it as a games machine.

A new Hard Drive running at 7200RPM may be a good idea, especially since new games take up space!

The machine will play games very well and they will look good... not the fastes possible but more than enough for most people unless your a major games player and want max fps etc...

have a look at this site as they compare prices from 13/17 different e-retailers, saves going around different sites and writing the prices down.

1]Asus A7N8X Deluxe.
I have this board and am very satisfied with it.
Note.a/Get revision 2.0 of tis board if possible
b/There is a new Nforce2 400 Ultra coming out that will have official support for 400fsb cpus{For future upgrade possibilities]

2]Prefer 333fsb for this board together with PC2700 DDR ram run in sync.

3]Get 2 sticks of 256Mb to take advantage of dual memory channel[rec.Crucial]

4]case[your personal choice]psu 400watt+ best quality you can afford.

you may be able to find some cheaper prices for the componants else where, but they seem very cheap as they are
