advice on installing SSD but keeping HDD with programmes

I am planning to update my computer as it is now 5 years old and runs Windows XP. I will upgrade to windows 7 because some technical software I use are not yet compatible with Windows 8. Ideally I would like to put Windows 7 on an SSD and keep my existing hard drive with the already installed software to save having to reinstall everything. But are the programmes likely to run from this without having to be reinstalled from scratch or should I just bit the bullet and re-install everything on a new HDD?

You will have to re install the programmes.

Your idea of having W7 on SSD is OK.

Most programmes give an option of where to install.

My XP PC which I use for driving games has C = XP D = Game programmes and E = My docs etc. CD drives being F & G. Pick you drive letters / order before you start and then stick to it.
