Advent hard drive controller

Hi All

My mate has an Advent laptop which has packed up and he has been told that the hard drive controller is broken and will cost £600 to fix as the machine cost £1000 is this right and how easy is it to do it yourself.
Hope you can help thanks in advance

Sounds like the money grabbing swines want £600 for a new hard drive. The hard drive controller is in the hard drive itself and tells the computer the capacity of the drive, the make and model etc. Try changing the hard drive first to see if it solves the problem. Doing this is a lot cheaper than £600.

*The hard drive controller is in the hard drive itself*

Well that's not quite the whole story - yes, much of the drives controller is on the drive - but part is also on the motherboard - and if it's the motherboard that really does need replacing, that's a whole different ballgame.

However, the quote does seem on the high side - get a second opinion pronto.

Thanks now for the second part how easy is it replace?

*how easy is it replace?*

You can only replace the motherboard - it's an integral part of it. Sorry if that wasn't clear from what I said.

And the motherboard in a laptop is a specialised part - designed for that laptop only - you might not easily be able to buy one.
