Advent 7003 USB (power?) problems

Hi there. I've got an old Advent 7003 laptop that is having trouble with some USB devices.
I've deduced that it will only see devices that have their own power supply... like camera, scanner and printer. I've had no success with basic items like memory sticks, Microsoft optical mouse and cable modem. Says it needs a driver for them... a Microsoft mouse shouldn't need a driver installing in WinXP!!!!! (it's already there!)

I've uninstalled USB drivers and re-installed them.

I've updated everything like WinXP SP2 and updated USB drivers.

I've also checked the very limited BIOS settings.

I've also tried to update the VIA chipset which is supposed to be on this board..(some rumour about USB1 & USB2 issues - however it only stated that speed would be the issue, not recognition) but no such luck and the support info for this laptop is near none existant.

Anyone had similar problems/solutions that they may suggest.

Thanks

VIA USB chipsets used to be a pain in the ****.

You probaly need the hyperion 4 in 1 drivers for more info have a look at click here
