ADSL filters

Got home today to discover my broadband connection had gone down. After a small panic attack I managed to sort it by changing the ADSL filter. I was just wondering whether this is a common occurrence? It seems odd for something like that to just pack up spontaneously.

? This is strange because, unlike what a lot of people think, the ADSL is connected straight through. The filter operates on the analogue (phone) side of the connection.

Seems strange, but if you want more filters try ebuyer quickcode 39530, which I find very good and cheap.
