Ads that won't go away

I downloaded an Active X control that I probaly shouldn't have, although I stopped the download and removed anything installed I still have a few ads popping up when surfing the net.

I have run Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-aware and X-Clean but I still get the ads.

Pop-up blockers are all on.

How can I get rid of this problem? Is this a case of editing the registry, and if so what am I looking for and where would I find it?

You can check/disable/remove ActiveX controls from within Spybot click here

I have enabled that and checked the Active X downloads and nothing seems out of the ordinary or unusual.

I think this problem lies elsewhere
