i have attempted to access the registry by running regedit and i get a message you are denied access by your administrator could anyone explain what is blocking this access

Are you using a company PC? If so, that's the reason.

If not, you need to change your account to give it 'Administrative clout'.

Start - Control Panel - User Accounts, and log in as the administrator. Hopefully you can then run regedit.

its my own pc what exactly do you mean by administrator clout how do you do this

I'm not running an XP machine at the moment but from my aged memory, Start, Run and type control userpasswords2 (note the space)and make yourself an administrator.

iam already logged on as the adminstrator so it has to be something else .
