Assuming your OS is XP then go into control panel - display - settings. This will show you what you currenly have. The manual with the new monitor will tell the maximum settings you can have. Go for a refresh rate of 85.

The recommended refresh rate for LCD monitors is 60Hz. The monitor manual will confirm this, and also the native (recommended) resolution.
