using xp pro + ie6, I have a list of friends and family in my addres book but not assigned to a group, I have just created a new group for work details, my colleagues names are in this group but also in with my main list, can I delete them from this list without deleting them from the group or do I need a new group for family and friends, thanks

You need a new group for family and friends. I`m pretty sure that if you delete anyone from the main address book they will disappear from the groups since the latter is a shortcut if you like to selecting from the main list. I assume you`re using Outlook Express. If so you might like to consider Outlook if you have Office installed. In Outlook you can keep different address books for business and social contacts. I have two other "Folders" as they are called in Outlook for Society Members and Clubs so finding specific contacts is easier. I am also able to copy contacts between folders so that I can have a person in two or more folders. (I might have a contact who is a business, social and Society member for example.
