Can I add a 120gb HDD to my athlon 1700 as a slave easily? Do i have to use FDisk or will it run happily as one drive as soon as i install and boot up?

Add the drive and then In windows Go Start then Right click on My Computer chose Manage then Disk Management .... Right Click on the new can parition and format it there.

Sometimes (but not always), in Disk Management, when you right click the new disk (which should be disk1), you only get an option to initialise the disk. If so, select that. Then right click the disk again and select create new partition as suggested by AndySD.
