I have a Dell 4100 with 128RAM installed. There are two free slots available and apparently the max memory the chip will recognise is 512. So. Can i put in another 128 and a further 256 or does it have to be balanced i.e two new 256.?

No it doesn't have to be equal amounts in each slot, you can mix memory amounts up to the maximum allowed for each slot. So your 128 and 256 should work fine together.

AFAIK you can mix them up. See the mobo handbook if youu have one.
