ad hoc network low speeds

I have a PCI 802.11 b/g card in the PC and a Laptop which is wireless enabled b/g. Connection is fine but shows only 11mbps when I expected 54mbps.
Am I expecting too much, or is there some setting changes I can make to reach the higher speed.

Some adapters will revert to 11b when placed in a peer-to-peer network, but you should check each adapter's settings to ensure that 11g is selected rather than dual-mode or 11b. Switch back to dual-mode or 11b if the connection fails when forced to use 11g.

The 802.11g standard only requires that Wireless Network Adapters support an 11Mbps connection when used in "Ad Hoc" mode. It is unusual to get a higher speed without using a Wireless Access Point (Infrastructure network).

Thank you "ade.h" and "mgmcc". Will try settings approach; if no luck will settle for 11mbps.
