I have set up an adhoc internet connection with another computer & it works fine.

My question is, does the host computer have to be connected to the internet (it obviously has to be turned on) in order to allow the 2nd computer to use the internet connection.

not entirely sure but why dont you just try it and see what happens

On an adhoc setup, the host computer does have to be on, because access is via the modem attached to the host PC. If you buy a router you can set up an infrastructure network, and then each PC connected can access the net independently.
