Activex seems to have many unexpected guests

I have started using AVG 8 (free)on XP home. It runs for about 7 hours on my 2 drives (about 100 gig of data)and shows a results list of dozens of trojans adware and spyware in the IE\activex directory. I keep removing the suspect files to the virus vault, but they keep returning every time I run AVG8. I have Activex turned off in the IE7 tools menu, in fact I don't even use IE anymore, I use Firefox2! So what is happening here, and why is Activex carrying so much potential bad baggage?

Thanks
