Activesync failure

I use a Dell Axim X5. Recently Activsyn has stopped working. When I put the Axim in the cradle the USB connection starts, the Axim connects and then whilst "Looking for changes", there is a synchronisation error, the connection is lost and that is an end to it. I have uninstalled Activsyn and installed latest v3.8. I have uninstalled the Axim and reinstalled it, but it's just the same. Any ideas?
